JULY 2,  2008

Weather isn't too bad, even with the couple of storms we had over the weekend.  The gardens and flower beds liked it and one didn't have to use their own water to do the job.  Hope our nice weather stays with us for quite some time.
Jerry and Sylvia Dempsey, Dover, DE, spent quite some time on vacation out West.  They got to Lopez on Thursday to spend a few days with her mother, Mrs. Sophie Bundle, and to help her celebrate her 90th birthday on July 1st.  Jeff, Donna and Ryan Dempsey, Laurel, MD,  also are coming in to visit from Thursday to Saturday, for this special time.  Jerry and Sylvia also visited his family in Dushore while they were here.
Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire, along with Bob and Tyler McGuire, Harvey's Lake, spent a few days at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis, Cobleskill, NY.  They were there for the 90th birthday party for her father.  Her sisters and brother and their families also gathered for this really fun time.  There were about 30 of us that enjoyed eating, visiting, eating some more, games and just sitting to take it all in.  My parents celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary on 1 July.
Don't forget, the dumpster is coming on Saturday, 12 July. It will be at the Township Building.  Call 928-7456 for details.
Mr. Ferdie Marek will have Country Store again for Old Home Day.  If you have unwanted items you'd like to donate, please call him at 928-8654 to make arrangements.  There will be no pick-ups.  Baked goods and produce are also welcome.
Birthday wishes to Mrs. Sophie Bundle on the 1st of July;  Babe (Borick) Snider on the 3rd; her daughter, Tammi, on the 5th; and husband, Paul, on the 7th; Frank Andjeski, Sr. on the 8th; Loretta Weidner on the 10th; and Eric Burd on the 12th.  Hope you all have a great day.
Happy Anniversary to Curt and Linda (Popso) Schroeder as they celebrate on the 3rd.  Have a nice day.
Mrs. Katherine Matychak has returned home after spending some time with her daughter, Andrea and Joe Anderson, Josh and Kristin, Denver, along with Josh's fiancee, Mindy, and Kristin's fiance, Tom.  They all enjoyed some time a the beach at Stone Harbor, NJ.  Had a really great time with all the family.
Next Civic meeting, 15 July, 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.
Hope you all have a very nice and safe Fourth of July weekend; there will be lots of picnics and activities going on.
That's the news for this time.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Let's hope for some really nice weather for this month.   Have news give me a call at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I'll be here next time.

JUNE 25, 2008

Getting some nice weather, along with a couple pretty good thunderstorms.  Guess we need the rain, but don't need the low temperatures early in the morning.       Tony, Patti and Anthony Sneidar, along with friends, Duclan and Luke, all from Philly, spent a few days at the Sneidar home on Church Street.
Don't forget the dumpster on Saturday, 12 July.
Also, remember that Mr. Marek will have a Country Store again this year at Old Home Day.  If you have some items you no longer want, please call him at 928-8654 to make arrangements.  There will be no pick-ups.  Baked goods and produce are also welcome.
Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, 15 July, 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.
Jack and Joyce Walsh, Larksville, spent the weekend at their home on Main Street.
Bob and JoAnn McGuire visited his mother, Mrs. Margaret McGuire, Forty Fort, last Thursday.  Also got to see his sister, Margaret Dymond, Shavertown; his sister, Lola Mattie, Forty Fort; his niece, Georgia and Michael Martin and son, Mcguire, Swoyersville.
Well, how does your garden grow?  I've seen some pretty nice gardens and flower beds in my travels.  Hope they last and produce well before a frost or the deer come along and ruin everything.  Some are also having trouble with woodchucks and chipmunks.  They sure can be damaging little buggers.  Haven't seen the bear around here lately, but have heard he's out Route 487 in different spots.  Must be better food out there right now.
St. Vladimir's still has pirogies for sale; $4.50 per dozen; please call 928-9242 or 928-8557 to order yours.
Guess that's it for this time.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  I heard some storms are on the way, but also heard they may be "hit and miss".  Maybe they'll miss us this time.  Just get out, take a walk, sit on the porch, work in the garden or flower bed.  Before we know it, that "white stuff" will be flying and we'll be "cooped" up inside again.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll put it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Well, now we're getting some warm weather, or should I say HOT!  We did have a couple small rain storms over the weekend; that'll be good for the gardens.       Lee and Shirley Lutz, Bangor, PA, and some of their motorcycle friends took a ride to Lopez and had an enjoyable visit with Katherine Matychak.  Some riders had been here before, some had not.  They all like Lopez and make this trip at least once a year; have been doing this for about ten years now.   Was a perfect day for a ride.
Congratulations to our Lopez graduates:  Allen Williams, Billy Stasiak, Kristin McDonald and Matt Beaver.  Good luck in your future endeavors.

Originally from Perth Amboy, NJ; Maxine has a lot of family in Lopez and tries to visit once a year. This year, Maxine & Jim took Rosie Decker and Dolly, Helen Decker/Moyer to lunch and had a great time. As always, they visited the cemetery, the old Tavern etc. They also stopped at the Orthodox Church for dinner and music and met Father Michael. Maxine loves Lopez and use to visit the town many times when her grandparents John & Julia Sasala took her there when she was small.
Just a reminder that a dumpster will be at the Township building on Saturday, 12 July.  You have time to get things ready for then.  Things that are NOT acceptable include batteries, paint, oil, and construction waste.  Refrigerators are acceptable if the freon is removed; if it is not, there is a $5.00 charge.  Tires are $2.00 up to 16 inches.  Cost is $15.00 per truck load.  If you have questions, please call the Township supervisors at 928-7456.

JUNE 4,  2008
Well, it looks like we may be in for some warmer weather, finally.  After having frost almost every morning last week, we're due for something better.  Seems good to feel the sunshine and be able to work in the garden without a jacket.  Maybe some rain on Tuesday night into Wednesday, but that will be good to get the plants and flowers going.
Mr. Ferdie Marek will again be in charge of Country Store for Old Home Day the first Sunday in August.  If you have unwanted items, please give him a call at 928-8654 to make arrangements.  There will be no pick ups.  Baked goods and produce are also accepted.  So, check your attic, your basement, your garage and see what you have that you no longer want.  Someone else may think it's a "treasure".

For those who go to Cold Spring to get water, please take any jugs back that you bring.  DON'T leave jugs for others to clean up.  Let's keep Cold Spring looking nice.  Thanks for your cooperation.
Not much this week.  I'm sure it will start to get more active, with different things on the horizon around the County.  Keep tabs on the Sully for activities that will be taking place.  I know the Dairy Parade is coming up soon and that's always fun.
Don't forget, Flag Day is coming up on the 14th; be proud to fly our great flag that day and every day of the year.

Boy, we couldn't have asked for a better Memorial Day weekend.  Weather was just perfect for picnics, outings, and anything else folks had to do.  I hoped you all enjoyed whatever it was you did over the Holiday weekend.  Was really nice to finally have some enjoyable weather.  We had a great Memorial Day parade in Lopez, along with a fine speech, given by Representative Tina Pickett.
Marian Hubiak, Baltimore, MD, Ted, Ev, Brad, Jamie and Ayden Hubiak, Downingtown,  drove to Mississippi to visit Tina (Hubiak) and Josh.  She is the daughter of Ted and Ev, and granddaughter of Marian.  Great grandson, Ayden, took the trip real well.  Tina is a dance teacher and has 80 kids and had her first dance recital and they all saw it while they were there.  On Mother's Day they all went to Josh's Mom's for dinner.   They also celebrated all the birthdays while in Mississippi. They went through seven states. It was an eleven hundred and thirty mile one way trip and took seventeen hours, driving straight through.  Weather was beautiful all the while they were there.  A good trip for all, but they were glad to get home.
Heard there was a nice crowd at the Bull Roast on Sunday at Russian Hall.
Charlotte Grant, Bear, DE, cousin of Diane Fanning, spent a few days at the Charnik home on Church Street.  With her was her daughter, Cathy McNeely and grand children, Summer and Christian, who have just come home from the Azores, on their way to Texas, where her husband will be stationed with the Air Force.  Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning, Landenburg, were also here over the Memorial Day weekend.

April 30,  2008

Weekend was really pretty nice and now we're getting some much needed rain so everything will start to grow and the grass will be green.  Of course, that means allergy season for those that do so much sneezing this time of year.  Gardens are being tilled and lawns mowed so I guess our summer is here.
Last Tuesday was Earth Day so Jeannie Kapler, Red Rock Job Corps, brought some kids down and cleaned up the EUB cemetery on Church Street.  Looks really good and thanks for a job well done.
Congratulations to Kristin McDonald for Student of the Month at S. C. High School.  Also, to Cory McDonald for induction into National Honor Society last week.  Two young people to be proud of.

I hope all of you who celebrated Orthodox Easter had a really nice and Blessed Day.  I know there were many who were here and attended the Easter services at Church.  The weather was perfect.
Mr. "Big Bruin" was seen around town for five or six days all at once; now he seems to have gone for a while.  Maybe he wanted a change in atmosphere so moved on, which is fine.
Pirogies are still available from St. Vladimir's Church.  If you'd like any, please call 928-8557 or 928-9242; $4.50 per dozen, and are good any time.
Some birthday wishes go to Paige and Kyler Burke who were 5 on the 1st of May.  Their Mom, Gwen, held a party for them over the weekend and all had lots of fun.  JoAnn (Najaka) Day celebrates on the 2nd; and Ryan Dempsey will be 17 years old on the 7th.  Hope you all have a nice day.
Tony Sneidar, Philadelphia, spent a couple of days at his home on Church Street and did some turkey hunting while he was here.
Guess that's about it for now.  Enjoy your week, we are to get some warm, sunny weather, which will be great.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll put it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

April 23, 2008

What a nice weekend.  Was so good to be outside enjoying the sunshine and nice days.  Hope it keeps up.  The daffodils are blooming and I see folks are starting to rototill their gardens.  That's a good sign, I hope.
Dick and Adel, West Chester, spent the weekend at their home on Church Street.  Was short, but they enjoyed while they were here and also visited with Mrs. Katherine Matychak.
Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, Melbourne, FL, celebrated a very nice 60th birthday.  On Friday, David, Carole, his brother Leo and Cindy Underwood, and Alex and Ginny Stavisky helped her celebrate at the Salt and Sweet Polish restaurant.  They all enjoyed dinner and Carole said they have the best pierogies.  On Saturday, her daughter, Kari and David Spinosa and family had a luncheon for her, with lots of delicious foods and a home-made carrot cake, specially decorated for her.  Her son, Tom Van Dyke also took part in the celebration.  She got many nice gifts and said it was a great day.
Donations are still being taken for up-keep of the EUB cemetery on Church Street.  If you'd like to give, please only send checks, made out to the EUB fund.  Send them to Bobbi Jo Brown, P.O. Box 123, Lopez, PA  18628.  All donations greatly appreciated.    Mary (Yarosh) Swan, Cecelia and Luke, Sinclairsville, NY, and niece, Brittany Yarosh, Ithaca, NY, spent last week at their home in Lopez.  They had a great time walking their dogs, visiting their Aunt Katherine Matychak and helping with Church activities.  They were on Spring break from school.
You can still get pierogies from St. Vladimir's Church, just in time for Easter.  Call 928-8557 or 928-9242 to order yours.
Bob and Gary Main spent the weekend at Tally-Ho Retreat on Church Street.
Bob, Kim and Tyler McGuire, Harvey's Lake, spent a few days in Ocean City, MD, so we baby sat their dog, Sasha.  Had a good time with her while she was here.  Did lots of walking.  Bob picked her up on Monday afternoon.
Happy Anniversary to Vince and Ruth Yudzeky who celebrated 50 years on Saturday.  Also to John and JoAnn McDonald whose special day was on Wednesday, the 16th.  Congratulations and hope you all had a great day.
Watch this column for date of next Civic meeting.
Happy Easter to all of the Orthodox faith as they celebrate on Sunday, the 27th.  A Blessed and special time for all.
Got the following e-mail from Tim and Bobbi Jo Brown on Main Street.   He's been seen by others up that way also.  Enjoy. (Game Commission has put a bear trap up there and hopefully he will be caught.)  Don't know if it's a "he" or "she", just that "it" is big.
Well, we've FINALLY been able to see the bear here at the house and I must say...IT"S HUGE !! Around 12:15 last night (Sat.) I saw it in Brian's dumpster (getting some leftover wings I'm sure); so I woke up Bobbi Jo and to our surprise it climbed out and came over into our yard with a huge bag of garbage hanging from it's mouth and might I add, not even touching the ground.   I opened the door to try and get a picture as it continued through the yard but in no time at all he was behind the garage and I surely was not gonna follow it. I have 3 pieces of fence rail here and they are probably 3' high and 5' long and when standing in front of one of these it was hidden completely behind the bear. This morning I see he had laid up in the back yard and enjoyed his/her feast of chicken bones. This one was much larger than the one previously trapped in our yard and that one was 357 lbs so I would guess 450 or even 500 lbs !!!!  TOO big for town .  Hopefully we'll get some photos as it appears to have a big walkway between us and Brian. That's about it for now.  Sure is nice to get out and enjoy, so do that during the week.  Will make everyone feel better.  Have news you'd like in, just call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  Have a great week and I'll be here next time.

April 16,  2008

Gee, another really  nice Saturday and then Sunday was cold and windy, along with Monday morning.  Sure hope it's going to warm up.  The robins will be going back to where they came from if this keeps up.  Well, Mr. Bear is back around town.  Mike and Heather McDonald saw him in their yard last Wednesday evening.  Later, he came to our house and took down our bird feeders.  Roseanne also had him at her house where he knocked down part of her fence.  So, he's out and about, and if you want to keep your feeders in one piece, I guess the only thing to do is take them in every night.
Happy Birthday to Jack Walsh who celebrates on the 28th.  Hope you have a nice day.
Tony Sneidar, Jr., Philadelphia, spent a few days at his home on Church Street.  Rained all day Friday, but Saturday turned out to be a nice "work" day for him.
Thank you everyone for the cards, calls and "treats" for my birthday.  Thanks to the "Happy Hour" gang for the surprise party; Katherine for the delicious cake; and Carmela for the very tasty lemon cupcakes.  All was appreciated and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Get well wishes to Mother Barbara at the Orthodox Monastery in Ellwood City.  She has had surgery and we hope she is coming along really well and we'll see her in Lopez soon.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her during this time.
Don't forget to order your pirogies from St. Vladimir's Church.  Call 928-8557 or 928-9242 to place your order.  They are $4.50 per dozen and are good for any meal.
Not a lot of news this week.  Guess most are waiting for the nicer weather, like I'm doing.  Will be time to think of gardens and flower beds if we can keep the frost and cold away.  That's it for this time.  Enjoy your week, the weather is "supposed" to improve, so take advantage.  (I did hear snow showers but hope not.)  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  Take care; thanks for reading ,and I'll be here next time.

April 9,  2008

Well, Saturday wasn't the best of days, but Sunday turned out much nicer.  Would be nice if the weather would stay one way, and that's warm and sunny.  We've had enough rain for a while.  Would be nice to be outside doing things in the yard or just walking.
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Tamburro, Marlton, NJ, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  They said it was finally good to be here, since they hadn't come for quite some time.

St. Vladimir's Church is still selling pirogies.  If you'd like to order, please call 928-8557 or 928-9242 to get yours.
Bob and JoAnn McGuire spent the weekend in Johnson City, NY, at the NY Southern Tier Geology Club mineral show, where Bob presented fluorescent mineral presentations for the two days while they were there.  There was a nice crowd for browsing, buying and taking part in this mineral show.  There were dealers there will all kinds of mineral related things for sale.  Had a good time.  Bob also did the fluorescent mineral presentations for two days at the Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club show, held the last weekend in March, in Athens, PA.  Was a good crowd there also, with dealers, demonstrations and educational exhibits to see.
Civic meeting, Wednesday, the 16th, 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Note change of day this time.
Some birthdays coming up to round out the month of April.  Happy Birthday wishes to Holly Ann Sperry who celebrates on the 20th; Jon-Paul Matychak, 23rd; Victor Gulick, 24th; Katherine Kapler, 25th; Mickey (Fedorchak) Mowery, 26th; and David Spinosa, 28th.  Hope you all have a nice day.
Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baines who celebrate 42 years on the 30th.  Many more.  Most of you remember him as the mail truck driver coming here many years.
Not too much going on right now.  I think everyone is waiting for better weather to finally make its way here.  So, that's it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you may do.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

April 2, 2008

Not a bad weekend, although some places got lots of snow.  Talked to one gal from up NY way, and they had 8 inches on the ground Friday morning.  Was cold and windy and they were expecting more coming in on Sunday evening.  We had a little rain, but I'm hoping our snow is gone for the year.  That would be so nice; then have the sun come out and warm things up.
Andrea Anderson, Denver, spent a couple of days with her mother, Mrs. Katherine Matychak.  Was a nice surprise and nice to have her home.
Forgot to mention in last week's news that Alex and Ginny Stavisky, Palm Bay, FL, and Cindy and Mike Stavisky, Orlando, FL, also enjoyed dinner with David and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, Melbourne, FL.  I had it in the article, changed the article a little, a didn't put them back.  All had a nice time.
Spending Easter Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Kitty Maximiak was Mary and Julio Santiago, Kyra and Keene Vinitelli, and friends, Jamie and Hanna Mackay, all from Jackson, NJ.  They had been spending a few days at the Santiago cabin in Troy.  John and JoAnn McDonald and Leo McDonald were also there for Easter dinner.
Don't forget to order your pirogies from St. Vladimir's Church.  Call 928-8557 or 928-9242 to get yours.  Cost is $4.50 per dozen and are good any time.

Civic meeting will be held on WED., 16 April, 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.  This will be the first meeting of the year.  Note the day is WED. and not Tues.       I see that our streets will be swept on 12, 13, and 14 May. There will be a dumpster on 12 July.  Any questions, call the Township Supervisors.
Guess that does it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you plan to do.  Pretty soon folks will be thinking of flower and vegetable gardens and getting the ground ready for planting.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

March 19,  2008

HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY!  I know it was Monday, but hope you all had an enjoyable time doing whatever you did.  The weather wasn't too bad, but could have been better.  Was talking to Mike McDonald on Sunday and he mentioned he has seen some robins and I hadn't seen any.  Was on my way home and all of a sudden, there were four in the yard.  So, now I've seen robins.  Good sign?  Hope so.  It was cold, windy and snowy over the weekend.  The week is to be a little better, but I heard lots of rain.  As long as it isn't snow.
I see that Kyler and Paige Burke and Kaeleigh McDonald have decorated the bushes and hedges with some pretty colored eggs for the Easter Bunny.  Looks pretty neat.   Hope the bunny finds them all.
Sympathy from the community to the relatives and many friends of Leo (Coco) Mattichak, on his passing last Wednesday.  Funeral was held on Saturday.
I got to talk to Scott Woodford, Windsor, NY, who was at the family homestead over the weekend, just enjoying a nice time.  He says Hi to Uncle Bruce, in NC, who is doing fairly well since the passing of his wife, Aunt Aggie.  He has many friends who visit him often and help to care for him.    Got a phone call from Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, Melbourne, FL, to share the following:  Her husband, David, has a bluegrass band, called Atlantic Bluegrass.  On Friday, 21 March, they will be on the Internet for anyone who'd like to hear.  Go to www.tropicwaveradio.net.  Click on "What's Happening in Brevard", then click on radio or live video, whichever you'd like.  They will be playing "Catch the Wave", which they also have out on their new CD.  If you like bluegrass, give it a shot and see what you think.  The time will be from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
St. Vladimir's Church is again selling pirogies.  If you'd like to order, please call 928-9242 or 928-8557.  Cost is $4.50 per dozen.  They'll be good for Easter.  Order early to be sure to get yours.
Wishing all of you a very Blessed and Happy Easter with family and friends.    Guess that's the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you do.  Let's hope it's nice enough to get out and enjoy the sunshine and warmth.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll put it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

MARCH  12,  2008

We've been having some crazy weather; the snow, sleet, white-outs and especially the wind.  Is warm weather on the way?  I sure hope so.  At least the sunshine feels pretty good, when it does get to shine.  We have had our share of rain over the past week.  Have you seen the many flocks of geese that have been flying over?  That may be a good sign.  Haven't seen a robin yet, but have heard from some that have.
Hope you all got your clocks turned ahead early Sunday morning.  Was kind of hard to give up that extra hour of sleep, but guess we'll get used to it.
The "Happy Hour" gang had a surprise birthday party for Lynn Spence on Friday evening.  Happy Birthday, Lynn, and I'm sure all had a great time.  Happy Belated Birthday to Jim Spence who celebrated his on 21 February.
Scott Aharonian, Narvon, spent the weekend at his place on Dutch Mountain.

Not too much in the way of news right now.  When the weather gets nicer, we'll see more folks out and about and some coming to open up their places for the up-coming summer.   Then, we'll have more news to report.
Jim and Barbara Craig, Media, and town, enjoyed a vacation in Florida.  Hope the weather was nice for them and they had a good time with family and friends.

March  5, 2008

What a beautiful Monday.  As I sit here and type my news, it is already 47 degrees, the sun is shining, and it's not too windy.  A flock of geese were seen flying North this morning.  It was said it means something or they are some dumb birds.  Think SPRING and maybe we'll get warm weather to stay.
John and JoAnn McDonald spent last week in Worthington, MA, with John, Gretchen and Aine McDonald.  They took Aine home after she was here for a week.  A nice time enjoyed by all.
Got the following e-mail to share.  Dave and Carol (Fedorchak) Underwood, Melbourne, FL,  were guests at Alex & Ginny Stavisky's home in Palm Bay, FL, last Tuesday for a homemade chili dinner. Dave took his Classic GTO out for a ride and a good time was had chatting about the "Old Times". Always nice to see old friends.
********Don't forget to turn your clocks AHEAD late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.       Get well wishes to Barb Andrewlavage who recently had double knee surgery.  She's coming along really well; getting around some and we hope she continues to improve.  Her sister, Elaine, is here from Maryland to spend some time and give her a helping hand.
Some birthday wishes to go out.  Happy Birthday to John Harvey, 10th; Monte Gulich, 11th; Bob McGuire, Sr., 13th (he's still 39); and Elizabeth Weisbrod, the 14th.  Hope you all have a great day.   Hopefully, the weather will stay nice.
Happy Anniversary to Joe and Tina (Hoover) Tabor as they celebrate on the 14th.  Have a nice day.
Guess there is still a little time to get in some snowmobiling, skiing, or sledding before the snow melts away.  I'll go for the snow melting and nice, sunny days ahead.
That's the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans; it should be pretty nice.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you and thanks for reading. March  5, 2008

FEBRUARY 27, 2008

Well, we had quite a storm on Friday into Saturday, but what a beautiful Sunday it was.  It was MINUS 9 early in the morning, but the sun came out and warmed up quite nicely.  We could use a lot more of these days.
A committee has been set up to have perpetual care for the EUB Church cemetery in Lopez.  This is behind the Bob Burke home.  It is being done so the cemetery will be properly taken care of and not go into high grass and weeds.  They have someone who will do the mowing; now they need donations to help defray the cost.  If you'd like to give to this perpetual care project, send you donation to Bobbi Jo Brown, Sec./Treas., Lopez, PA  18628.  For more information, please call Jake Gardner.
Sympathy from the community to the Stasiak/Woodford families on the passing of Aunt Aggie, in NC, last week.  I will miss sending her little articles on the families here.  She will be missed.
Congratulations are in order.  David and Kari Spinosa, Melbourne, FL, are the proud parents of a baby boy, born on 22 February, 6 lb. 10 oz., 21 inches in length.  He has been named Armond Michael (in honor of two great grandfathers).  He joins two very happy sisters, Lydia Grace and Elizabeth Marie.  Grandparents include David and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood; Ron Van Dyke; Patti and Bill Pepper, all from Melbourne, FL.  Also Larry and Diane Spinosa, Melbourne Beach, FL.  Great grandparents are Mike and Alice Fedorchak, Lopez.  Lots of luck and happy days with the new baby.
Happy Birthday wishes to Anthony Sneidar III who will be 15 on 1 March; Alice Dworsky on the 7th; and Katherine Matychak on the 8th.  Hope you all have a nice day.
Jack and Joyce Walsh, Larksville, spent an enjoyable weekend at their home on Main Street
Jim and Barbara Craig, Media, spent Friday to Sunday at their home on Church Street.  They beat the storm by coming in early and left on the beautiful day Sunday.       Irene Pequignot, Linden, spent Saturday visiting her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray.   Linda (Hallabuk) Baton, Dushore, also stopped by to visit.
Guess that's it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you might do.  We may get a couple more storms, but then, we may not.  Have to wait and see.  Think SPRING and maybe we'll get some nice weather and it will stay.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

FEBRUARY 20,  2008

Gee!!  Couldn't believe the temperature of 45 degrees on Monday morning.  But, the forecast was to be down to 24 by late afternoon.  We did have some heavy rain on Sunday night so took away a lot of the ice and snow.  Our weather has been so unpredictable; never know what it's going to do next.  Hope you all enjoyed your President's Day holiday.
Sympathy from the community to the Matt Dayton family on the passing of his sister, Mildred Binkly, Deland, FL.  Matt has a home here on Rt. 487.
Got the following e-mail to include in the news:
Tom & Lisa attended the Wild Game dinner on Saturday at the Saint Francis Hall in Mildred with Tom's parents, Tom & Rocky Finan.  Had a delicious meal, and Game Commissioner Bill Williams did and exceptional presentation on the PA. Black Bear.  Well attended.
Scott and Adam Aharonian, Narvon, spent the holiday weekend at their home on Dutch Mountain.
Aine Lee McDonald, Worthington, MA, is spending the week with her grand parents, John and JoAnn McDonald.  She is the daughter of John and Gretchen.  I'm sure they will have a fun-filled, busy, enjoyable week while she is here.
We had enough requests to make a minimum order for the 2002 (Hotel Lopez) and 2003 (School) commemorative mugs.  The reserved orders are taken care of and we have few extra mugs for sale; for those of you who may have missed out and want to add to your collection.  If interested, please let us know; they will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  They are $20 each if picked up; if mailed, postage will be extra.  You can contact us below.  We are also taking orders for the 2008 mug, which will be SS Peter & Paul Byzantine Church.  If interested, please let us know and we'll reserve a mug for you; still $20 each.  Take a look at the website:  www.lopezpa.com to see what the previous mugs look like.  We've had many nice comments so far.
Tony Sneidar, Jr., Philadelphia, spent Friday and Saturday at his home on Church Street.
The "flu bug" is still around and making some folks pretty sick.  Hopefully, you all will feel much better soon.  Let's have that "bug" go away for good.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Tamburro and two kids, Marlton, NJ, spent Saturday and Sunday at the Tamburro home on Church Street.  They enjoyed being out in the snow and sled riding.
Not much else going on.  I see tracks from snowmobilers riding around, but don't see them.  Not enough snow right now to do that.  I think more will be on the way so some will be glad to still take part in winter activities.
Guess that's it from here.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Just be careful going out.  With the icy conditions, walking is sometimes not too easy.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me at P.O. Box 224, Lopez, PA  18628; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  I'll be here next time and thanks for reading.

FEBRUARY 13,  2008

As most of you know I had the flu last week so didn't get any news in the paper.  I'm feeling much better and have news this week.  I heard there is a lot of that "buggy" stuff going around.  Hope the rest of you are feeling better too.
It is Monday morning and the temperature sure took a "nose dive" over night.  Went down to MINUS 5.  The sun is out brightly now, but the wind is still bitter cold.  Makes a person want to just stay in and look out the window.  But..........I heard better days are coming.
Evalyn Lansberry, Lebanon, recently spent a few days at her home on Main Street.
Dick Bradshaw, West Chester, was here at his home on Church Street to spend a couple of days.
I guess with most folks staying close to home, there isn't too much to report.  There are some birthday greetings to send out.  Happy Birthday to Alex Aharonian on the 11th; Dorothy Pirritano and Heather Burke, on the 12th; Lisa Kellogg on the 13th; Krystal (Stasiak) Vermeire and Tom Van Dyke, on the 14th; Clair Johnson II on the 20th.  I may as well finish out the month with birthday wishes to Chloe Burke on the 21st; Ray Barber and Jacob Williams on the 23rd; Bob McGuire, Jr. on the 26th; and John Borick gets to celebrate 84 years on the 29th.  Hope you all have a nice day.
Hope you all have a nice Valentine's Day with your loved one, special friend, or whomever you choose.  It's always nice to spend any time, any occasion with those close to you.
Tony Sneidar, Jr. and Joe Zimmerman, Philly, spent one day last week at the Sneidar home on Church Street.  On their way home, they stopped in Harrisburg to check out the Sports Show.
Guess that's it.  Enjoy your week, it should get better. Think SPRING!!  Last I heard Tuesday into Wednesday will be a little on the snowy side; Thursday and Friday much nicer; and the weekend snowy again.  I guess we have to expect that since it is Winter in Sullivan County.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading.  I'll be here next time.

My reporter was under the weather with the flu bug so there isn't a report for this week.. She should be back next week all better and ready to report.

Not a bad weekend and the week looks promising as well.  Maybe Friday we won't get the rain, sleet and snow that has been predicted.  But.....they say it's to warm up and just think that Spring is around the corner.  Sounds good to me, if we do get Spring this year.
Tom Beck, Sunbury, and his friend, Barb, Watsontown, visited Bob and JoAnn McGuire on Tuesday, the 22nd.  They also enjoyed shopping on their way here.  On their way home, they stopped for dinner at Sonestown Country Inn to celebrate Barb's birthday.  Had a really nice visit with them.
Jim and Barbara Craig and Gus and Edith Tamburro, along with Gus's mother, spent the weekend at the shore in New Jersey.  Hopefully the weather was nicer there than here.
Some birthday wishes to go out to Kyra Vinitelli on the 1st of February; Tyler McGuire (7), the 2nd; Helen Amon, the 5th; and Tiffany Popso, the 7th.  Hope you all have a good day.
Happy Anniversary to Al and Pat (Romania) Burd as they celebrate 31 years on the 5th.  Have a great day.
Haven't seen a lot of folks here in town.  Maybe just keeping a low profile or staying in out of the cold.  Should be getting much nicer so more will show up at their homes here.
Guess that's it.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  When the sun shines, get out and take in some of that good, fresh air.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading.  I'll be here next time.

January 23,  2008

WOW!!  It sure has been cold the last few days, with temperatures on the MINUS side.  Even with the sun shining during the day, it's still cold and sometimes pretty windy.  I don't think it got it very warm  over the weekend.
Jim and Barbara Craig, Media, were able to spend the long weekend at their home on Church Street.
Marty, Dee, and "Bling-Bling", Philly, spent the holiday at their home here and had an enjoyable time.
Rose Gardner would like to express her appreciation and gratitude to all those who helped make her 90th birthday so special.  She says thanks to Bonnie and Bill Killian for the beautiful birthday cake; to all her many Bingo friends; along with her relatives, friends and neighbors for the many, many cards, gifts and phone calls she received.  She sure was surprised and appreciated it so much.
Got some birthday wishes to go out.  Mike Stavisky, son of Alex and Ginny, celebrates on the 24th; Scott Aharonian and Jennifer Pequignot, the 28th; Stacie Rice, the 29th; Lisa Burke and son Jason, both on the 30th.  Hope you all have a nice day.
With the colder weather, I guess most folks are staying close to home, so not much to report this week.   Can't even do much snowmobiling with no snow in the fields.
Guess that's it.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Just remember,  Spring is just around the corner.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  Have a great week and I'll be here next time.

January 16, 2008

We've sure been having some nice weather and didn't get that storm of 1-5 inches that was predicted for Sunday night into Monday.  That's fine with me.  I'm ready for Spring.
David and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, Melbourne, FL, had Alex and Ginny Stavisky, Palm Bay, FL, to their house recently for and Italian dinner.  All had a nice visit and Alex and Ginny say they are enjoying FL so far, in their new home.  David was playing with his Atlantic Bluegrass Band down there at Ozzie's Crab House.  He does this every Wednesday.  The last Wednesday he was there, Alex and Ginny went to listen.  Later that night, there was an electrical fire and the place burned to the ground.  Now, they'll look for a new place to play.
Rosie Gardner would like to say thanks to Sequoya Hoover for the nice 90th birthday greeting that was in the paper.  Sure made her day.
Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives, and friends of Mrs. Helen Hallabuk who passed away last week.  She was a resident at The Highlands in Laporte.  Funeral was held at St. Vladimir's Church, with burial in the parish cemetery.
Condolences to the Marek family on the passing of their brother, Col Frank Marek on December 5th, in Texas.
Some birthdays to mention.  Happy Birthday to Aunt Aggie down in NC who celebrated on the 13th;  Adel Bradshaw, the 20th; Irene Pequignot, the 22nd; and Judy Rattigan, the 23rd.  Hope you all have a nice day.
Happy 13th Birthday to "Slick" from the gang at Happy Hour.  His special day was Sunday, the 13th.  Hope you had a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Alex and Ginny Stavisky for 36 years on the 22nd; and to Al and Jeannie Kapler on the 23rd.  Have a good day.
Rev Mother Christophora and Sister Martha, Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, spent a few days with Mrs. Katherine Matychak.  They enjoyed making candy, shopping, and just relaxing while they were here.
Glad to hear that Della Koshuba, Media, is feeling much better.  She is the mother of Adel Bradshaw and spends time during the summer at the Bradshaw home on Church Street.  We hope she continues to improve daily.
Guess that's it.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Seems to be pretty nice right now to get out and breathe some fresh air.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll put it in for you.  I'll be here next time.
With this weather, the flowers will start to bloom; then we'll get a big "freeze" and they'll be gone.

January 9,   2008

Well, we're having a few nice days.  Wish it would last and then warm up about April.  But.......we know that's not going to happen, right??   I know with the nice weather, folks have started to take down their Christmas decorations so they won't be freezing trying to do it later.  Hope those of you who celebrated Orthodox Christmas on Sunday, the 6th had a nice day.
Congratulations to Craig Germany who graduated on December 14th from the Art Institute of Philadelphia with a BS in Graphic Design.  Good luck, Craig.  He is the grandson of Jim and Barbara Craig, Church Street, and spent many summer vacations here.  He has some job opportunities on the horizon and we hope the best for him.
Joe and Diane Fanning, Landenberg, spent some time over the New Year holiday at their home on Church Street.  They invited John Gavlick over for a delicious venison dinner while they were here and he had an enjoyable time.
Sympathy from the community to relatives and friends of Bob Qualie who passed away on December 29th.  He was a long time resident of the town and will be missed.  He could always be seen taking his daily drives around town just to get out and about.
Mrs. Theresa Kulsicavage spent the Christmas Holiday with her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sinovich and daughter, Gina; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Paoli and family, all in Wilmington, DE.
Sr. Ellamae McDonald, Ellwood City, spent some time over New Year's with her brother, John and JoAnn McDonald, her brother, Leo McDonald, and her sister, Kitty Maximiak.  All had a nice time together.

Happy Anniversary to Bruce and Agnes Day on the 6th for many years together.  Also to Linda and Ted Beaver on the 12th.  Have a great day.
That's about it for now.  Enjoy your week, it is to be "reallllly" nice and take it while you can.  Have news, call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at uvbob@epix.net.  I'll get it in for you.  I'll be here next time.

January 5, 2008

Hope you all had a nice Christmas and have a Happy, Healthy New Year.  Got a little bit of snow on Sunday evening and more is predicted for New Year's.  Guess we have to expect that.
Gary and Marian Gavlick, Albuquerque, NM, spent Christmas week with his son, John Gavlick.  They had a nice visit together.
Mrs. Katherine Matychak spent some time over the Christmas holiday with her daughter, Andrea, Joe, Josh and Kristin Anderson, Denver, PA.  Also there was Josh's fiancee, Mindy, and Kristin's fiance, Tom.  All had a really nice time together.
Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire spent Christmas Eve with his mother and family, Mrs. Margaret McGuire; Mike and Lola Mattie; Georgia, Michael, Casey and Mcguire  Martin; Margaret Dymond; Larry and Tim Dymond.  Santa also made a visit to the house with gifts for Casey and Mcguire.  A nice time for family get-together.
Bob, Kim and Tyler McGuire, Harvey's Lake, spent Christmas Day with Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire at Brian's home.  Also with them was Marty Slocum.  Tyler stayed with his grandparents for the week.  His Dad picked him up on Friday afternoon.  While he was here he built a model rocket and launched it when his Dad came.  Had a really good time while he was here.  Was hoping to do some sledding, but with the rain earlier in the week, the snow was completely gone.
Our good friends, Alex and Ginny Stavisky, have gotten settled in their new home in Palm Bay, FL.  They spent the holidays with daughter, Cindy, and son, Mike, who live in Orlando.  If you happen to see a neat looking sailboat with a good looking captain and a great looking mate, look again --  it might be Alex and Ginny.
Congratulations to Mike and Heather McDonald on the birth of their daughter, Kaeleigh Marie, on 23 December.  She weighed 8 lbs. and is a cutie.  Lots of fun and luck with the new little one.
Jim and Barbara Craig spent a few days over the Holidays at their home on Church Street.  Sympathy from all on the passing of Jim's Aunt on 21 December.
